Subalternity,
Ruination, The Blues and Racial Capitalism: Tools for praxis in our time
What tools
are adequate to critically diagnosing the contours of contemporary capital and
inequality in our time? Sharad's work has taken him to specific ways of
attending to this question, from South India to South Durban. He will share his attempts at thinking with
and beyond the concepts 'subalternity' and 'ruination,' and how in both attempts
this involves confronting a set of dominant approaches with the limits and
possibilities imposed by racial capitalisms, broadly considered. This workshop will be oriented around
discussing tools adequate to our praxis. Participants are encouraged to come
with thoughts about their own uses of various theoretical and methodological
tools in social research for social justice.
